Malcolm-Jamal Warner has died at 54 after drowning during a vacation in Costa Rica, authorities confirmed. The incident occurred on Sunday, July 20, at Playa Cocles in the Limón province.

According to Costa Rica’s Judicial Investigation Department, Warner was swept away by a strong current while swimming. Nearby individuals tried to assist, but he was unresponsive when emergency crews arrived. Paramedics from the Red Cross pronounced him dead at the scene. Officials listed the cause of death as asphyxia. Another swimmer involved remains hospitalized in critical condition.

Warner rose to fame in the 1980s as Theo Huxtable on NBC’s The Cosby Show, appearing in every episode of the series’ eight-year run. He earned an Emmy nomination in 1986 and became a defining figure of the era’s television landscape.

Beyond his breakout role, he starred in Malcolm & Eddie, Reed Between the Lines, and The Resident. He had recurring and guest roles on several series, including 9-1-1, Sons of Anarchy, Suits, and American Horror Story.

Warner was also active in music and spoken word. He won a Grammy Award in 2015 for a collaborative performance of Stevie Wonder’s “Jesus Children of America” and was nominated again in 2023 for a spoken word poetry album.

Reactions from peers were swift. Tracee Ellis Ross, his former co-star, posted: “My heart is so so sad.” Viola Davis called him “OUR son, OUR brother, OUR friend,” while Eddie Griffin, who worked with him on Malcolm & Eddie, said, “Rest well, my big little brother.”
