Bronx Mitchel Houses High-Rise Partially Collapses in Gas Explosion

On Wednesday morning, October 1st, a gas explosion partially collapsed a 20-story apartment building in the Bronx, sending debris onto nearby streets. The blast occurred around 8:10 a.m. at 205 Alexander Avenue, part of the Mitchel Houses in the Mott Haven neighborhood. Authorities confirmed that, miraculously, no injuries were reported.

Firefighters responded quickly, using drones and search dogs to ensure no residents were trapped. FDNY Commissioner Robert Tucker explained that the collapse involved a ventilation shaft connected to the building’s boiler and noted that investigators were working to determine the exact cause.

Mayor Eric Adams urged residents to avoid the area while emergency teams assessed the scene. Officials evacuated select apartments, shut off gas throughout the complex, and set up shelters with support from the Red Cross. Office of Emergency Management Commissioner Zach Iscol emphasized that inspectors were checking apartments and foundations to ensure safety.

The Mitchel Houses, completed in 1966, span two city blocks and include 10 residential buildings with 1,730 units, housing approximately 3,500 residents. Multiple agencies, including NYPD, FDNY, NYCHA, Con Edison, and the Department of Buildings, coordinated the response. Demolition was planned to remove damaged structures and restore essential services such as heat, hot water, and cooking gas, while streets near Alexander Avenue and East 135th Street remained closed.
